IDAFS 4750 RACE AND RACISM

This seminar course offers an introduction to the theories of race and racism. We will cover the historical emergence of race and racism, debates over the relationship between racism and capitalism, and contemporary patterns of racial inequality and structural racism. The course will emphasize dynamics in the contemporary United States but will place those dynamics in historical, comparative, and global perspective. Finally, the course will cover how these dynamics overlap with topics from other sociological subfields such as education, economic sociology, organizations, and social movements, as well as methodological implications of theories of race and racism.
