ARCH 3205 HISTORY 5: IDENTITY AND ARCHITECTURE

A survey of indigenous, vernacular, and contemporary architecture and history with a focus on the non-Western world before and during the 18th and 19th centuries. The course addresses historical global architectural practices and the influences of colonialism, globalization, and national identity on the production of the built environment.
The course will examine the following topics: historiography, patterns and movement of people, ecological factors, vernacular building, role of the public sphere, urban strategies, colonial influences, effects of globalization, political and religious influence on building practice, national identity, Critical Regionalism and contemporary practice.
