Learning Disabilities Teacher Consultant, Post Master’s Certification
Program Description
This program leads to certification as a Learning Disabilities Teacher/Consultant (LDT/C) in the state of New Jersey. The program is designed for the experienced teacher who wants to advance to a position on a Child Study Team. Its purpose is to prepare competent, capable, fully prepared professional Learning Disabilities Teacher/Consultants to effectively function in a variety of settings assessing, diagnosing, and remediating individuals who require special education and/or related services. The program’s design follows a cohort model in which specific competencies are presented sequentially integrating the background and experience of the professional entering the program. Students are admitted in the Fall and will follow a sequence of courses as a cohort beginning in the Fall of Year One leading to the culminating Internship experience in a PK-12 school-based setting. This program is offered in a hybrid modality with blended synchronous and asynchronous courses for most courses. SPED 5422 and SPED 5402 have four evening on-campus, face to face sessions to provide hands-on training for clinical evaluation tools used by LDT/Cs.
The process is reflective, integrating past experiences and knowledge while studying current practices to build competent skills for the future professional. Ethical considerations for clients, as well as the value of each individual, are highlighted. This program meets the required state standards of the New Jersey Department of Education leading to standard certification as a Learning Disabilities Teacher/Consultant.
Admission Requirements (Fall Admittance Only):
In Addition to the University’s Admissions requirements:
- Baccalaureate degree and Master’s degree from an accredited college or university.

Official transcripts from all institutions attended.

Minimum three (3) years successfully, full-time teaching experience with a valid New Jersey teaching certificate. A letter from the candidate's school administrator/school district must be provided on a letterhead documenting teaching experience. Note that the experience must be as a full-time teacher.

Submit a writing sample that is 1-2 pages in length, which details the reasons the candidate is pursuing this certification and future goals.

Transfer of Credits
- Two courses from another institution of higher learning may be accepted provided credits are within six (6) years of previous graduate work.
- Course work descriptions must be submitted with application.
Kean University Credits
- Courses previously taken at Kean may be accepted if they fall within the (6) six year limit of previous graduate work. Acceptance is pending review of courses by coordinator.
*Students with transfer credits from Kean University or another institution will meet with the program coordinator to determine entrance into an already established cohort.

- Practicum and internship (90 Clinical hours)
- Minimum three (3) years, successful full-time teaching experience with a valid New Jersey teaching certificate required for certification.
